Helping our compatriots in their time of need

In the recent Sichuan earthquake, Lushan County near Ya’an City has been worst affected. According to reports, rescue work is difficult and supplies are scarce in some areas due to blocked roads.

The Central Government is highly concerned about the disaster and is mobilising the nation to carry out rescue and relief work. As Hong Kong is part of the nation, we have a responsibility to contribute towards these efforts. I have assigned the Chief Secretary for Administration to co-ordinate the relevant government departments to prepare for rending assistance as needed. I believe that Hong Kong people, as always, will give their full support to the rescue and relief mission out of compassion for their compatriots.

Last but not least, I must thank our journalists for dashing to the affected areas at great personal risk to report on the disaster for Hong Kong people. I hope they will all complete their work smoothly and return to Hong Kong safe and sound.
