Appreciation for Lo Wu Correctional Institution's food waste reduction scheme

Lo Wu Correctional Institution (LWCI) has launched a Waste No Food Scheme to encourage its inmates to reduce leftovers. It has also installed a food waste decomposing system to recycle leftovers into useful compost.

The Scheme not only reduces waste at source but also provides a good opportunity for inmates to work with the wider community in solving social problems with action and determination.

About 70 per cent of the LWCI population has joined the Scheme. I must thank the staff of the Correctional Services Department for their efforts and thank its inmates for pitching in.

Solid waste disposal is a major challenge facing Hong Kong. Leftovers account for about 40 per cent of our total municipal solid waste. By reducing food waste at source, we can extend the life of landfills and reduce the odours they give off.

We should not waste food.
