Meeting with Hong Kong students in Wuhan

Mainland China is a major partner of Hong Kong. It is the strategy of the Special Administrative Region (SAR) Government to establish a network of Economic and Trade Offices (ETOs) in the eastern, southern, western, northern and central regions of the Mainland. With the establishment of the Wuhan ETO, this network is basically complete.

The highlight of my visit to Wuhan this time was to officiate at the opening ceremony of the Wuhan ETO, which will provide more effective support for Hong Kong people in the central region of the Mainland.

There are over 400 students from Hong Kong studying at Wuhan University, most of them in undergraduate programmes in economics, business administration, journalism and communication and law. This morning, I visited this major university of the country and met with some Hong Kong students there to learn about their lives and studies. I also told them about the liaison and support services provided by the SAR Government for Hong Kong people in Wuhan.

Since the commencement of its operation, the Wuhan ETO has met with Hong Kong students in Wuhan on different occasions to establish closer contact with them, and organised various activities for them to meet and communicate with Hong Kong businessmen in Wuhan. The Wuhan ETO has also invited Hong Kong enterprises in Wuhan to provide summer internship places for these students. The response was very encouraging.

The SAR Government will continue to strengthen the "homeland relationship" and create more and wider career development opportunities for our young people through enhanced government-to-government, or G2G, work. I hope that Hong Kong people working or studying on the Mainland can make good use of the services provided by our ETOs there.
