Establishment of the Academy of Sciences of Hong Kong

The Academy of Sciences of Hong Kong (the Academy) will be established shortly. The inauguration ceremony will be held next week at Government House.

The idea of establishing the Academy was conceived in 2006 and a preparatory team was set up in the same year. Attaching great importance to science and technology, as well as to scientists and technologists, the current-term Government has been supportive of the establishment of the Academy. With donations from the business sector, the local science community can now finally realise its dream.

At the time of establishment, the Academy will have 27 founding fellows, including two Nobel Laureates.

Science research cannot be undertaken without talents. By conferring honorary fellowships, the Academy will give local science researchers the highest respect, recognition and encouragement. In each of the past two years, the Government awarded honours to a number of local scientists or appointed them as Justices of the Peace to show our appreciation of their contributions. The Academy and the Innovation and Technology Bureau, established almost at the same time, can complement each other in their work.
