Boao Forum for Asia Annual Conference - sub-forum on "Innovation and the New Economy of Hong Kong"

The Boao Forum for Asia Annual Conference, a major international event now in its 15th year, attracts the world's leading political and business leaders to come together to speak and exchange views. This year, many innovation and technology leaders joined the Forum, including Executive Chairman of the Board of Directors of Alibaba Group, Mr Jack Ma; Vice Chairman of Samsung Electronics, Mr Lee Jae-yong; Chairman of the Board of Management of Heraeus Holding GMBH, Mr Jan Rinnert; co-founders of WeWork, Mr Adam Neumann and Mr Michael Gross; and the father of Israel's hi-tech industry, Mr Yossi Vardi. In addition, we had in attendance the father of "disruptive innovation", Professor Clayton Christensen from Harvard University, and President of the Academy of Sciences of Hong Kong, Professor Tsui Lap-chee, who both joined the Forum's sub-forum on "Innovation and the New Economy of Hong Kong".

When I spoke in the sub-forum to an audience of more than 100 people, I pointed out that: innovation and technology is an important development strategy in the national 13th Five-Year Plan. Hong Kong is well equipped to serve as the country's "super-connector" in the arena of innovation and technology. Leveraging the opportunities brought about by the country's "Internet Plus" and "Made in China 2025" strategies, we will promote innovation and venture building to create more career development opportunities for Hong Kong people. The speakers had an in-depth discussion on the topic during the sub-forum, and participants also shared their insights.

An encouraging atmosphere of innovation and technology is being built up in Hong Kong.  The community also had very positive responses. Apart from the huge amount of resources put in by the Government, the sector also possesses the necessary funds, skills, equipment and talent. At the Boao Forum, I witnessed the passion and support of stakeholders from around the world towards innovation and technology, including representatives from governments, the industry, academia and the research sector,. This gives me even more confidence over the prospects of Hong Kong's innovation and technological development.
