Passing on the tradition of Cantonese opera and promoting its development

Today, the Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Lau Kong-wah, led a delegation of nearly 40 Hong Kong representatives - all enthusiasts in promoting the development of Cantonese opera - to visit the Department of Culture of Guangdong Province with the aim of further enhancing exchanges and co-operation in the passing on, promotion, preservation, study and development of Cantonese opera.

I have been an honorary patron of the Chinese Artists Association of Hong Kong for many years. I myself and the Government attach great importance to the inheritance and development of Cantonese opera. Last year, I invited the Consuls-General in Hong Kong to see a Cantonese opera performance staged by Hong Kong youths at Government House, part of which was featured in my Chinese New Year greetings video. I believe that staging Cantonese opera performances in Belt and Road countries will be one of the ways in strengthening people-to-people bonds between Hong Kong and these countries.
