| Sir Mark Young (1941-1947), the 21st Governor, surrendered to the Japanese
on Christmas Day, 1941. Government House was then 86 years old and needed an overhaul. The Japanese administration carried out extensive rebuilding and enlargement. In 1942, a 26-year-old engineer,Seichi Fujimura, was appointed to
prepare building plans for Government House. They included a dominant central tower and the streamlining of pillars and pediments to suit Japanese tastes. Upstairs, facing the harbour, a traditional Japanese tatami suite with raised floors and sliding shoji (rice-paper) screens was added.
A small tea-ceremony room was installed. The work was completed in 1944. Today, the tower remains a prominent feature
of this splendid building, capturing the attention of visitors and tourists.
