The last Governor, Mr Chris Patten (1992-1997), initiated extensive internal refurbishment based on the theme 'East Meets West' to reflect the internationalism and dynamism of Hong Kong. The new interior design reflected the dignity appropriate to the Governor's residence while recognising the Chinese heritage of the territory. Five key elements were given a complete overhaul at this time: the carpets, furniture, pottery, painting and sculpture.
The first Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Mr Tung Chee Hwa (1997-2005), chose not to live in Government House but continued to use it for official functions and to receive dignitaries. During his time, a bonsai gallery was introduced and a number of alterations were made. In particular, the kitchen was renovated to accommodate the preparation of Chinese cuisine and the Ballroom was opened to bookings by non-governmental organisations.
