| Government House has a unique and irreplaceable role in the fascinating history of Hong Kong. During colonial times, it not only housed British Governors and their families, but also provided accommodation for visiting royalty and other VIP guests. With China resuming its sovereignty over the territory and the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region on 1 July 1997, Government House became the most important venue for the Chief Executive and the Special Administrative Region to hold official functions and receive dignitaries. Government House occupies an extensive site along Upper Albert Road, Central. Its front elevation faces south towards the Peak, while below the north slope are the Central Government Offices. |
