Every trade has its masters and unity leads to success

I was delighted to attend a gathering today to congratulate local chefs for winning international awards with their Western cuisine. In November last year, the Hong Kong National Culinary Team entered two international culinary competitions - one in Basel, Switzerland and the other in Seoul, Korea - and emerged as overall champion on both occasions, outperforming many strong teams from around the world. The team has brought honour to Hong Kong and its success is well deserved. Congratulations to all team members!

Most of the members of the Hong Kong National Culinary Team have received training from the Vocational Training Council or the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education. Their success shows that every trade has its masters. Most parents want their children to go to university, but in reality some young people may find mainstream academic programmes unsuitable for them. For them, vocational education and training can provide alternative pathways and options. Our culinary team demonstrated that we can all make a name for ourselves, realise our dreams, build a successful career and live a better life if we are given the chance to unleash our potential and follow our aspirations and interests. The team’s accomplishments are inspiring and encouraging for all young people in Hong Kong. The Government also has the responsibility to provide appropriate support and development opportunities for our young people to give full play to their strengths. I have learnt from media reports that what the judges of the culinary competitions appreciated most was our team spirit, which enabled all our team members to fully deploy their skills and work together as one to create impressive dishes. This spirit of teamwork echoes the idea of unity that I always emphasise. Unity leads to success. By winning these international culinary competitions, our team bears testimony to this truth.
