Chief Executive Cup presentation ceremony

The presentation ceremony of the first Chief Executive Cup was held at Government House this afternoon. I took the opportunity to congratulate the Shatin Sports Association and the Hong Kong Federation of Education Workers on winning the Cup and the first runner-up prize of the tournament respectively. I also thanked the Hong Kong Metropolitan Sports Events Association for organising the event.

Since running in the Chief Executive election, I have been advocating the promotion of sports in three directions: sports for the whole community, cultivating elite athletes and making Hong Kong the place for major sports events. The Chief Executive Cup is an example of sports for the whole community.

A total of 65 football teams participated in the first Chief Executive Cup, all of them amateur teams formed by football enthusiasts. Each team was paired up with a charity in order to help the organisation gain more publicity and support from the community. Although it was the debut of the event, over HK$6 million was raised for the 65 charities involved. I hope that this tournament, which serves the dual purpose of promoting sports for the whole community and raising charitable funds, will become a regular event in Hong Kong.
